Junior Sailing Course Descriptions

OPTI NIGHT CLASS: Opti Tots 
(Beginner, ages 6 & 7, Students must be 6 by May 1st)
Tuesday and Thursday evenings 6pm-8:30pm  |  June 18 - July 25 SOLD OUT

This 6-week evening class is geared toward our youngest sailors with emphasis on FUN. Students are introduced to water safety, boat controls (main sheet and tiller), paddling, basic sailing maneuvers like tacking and gybing, and wind through classroom and on-the-water activities aboard Optimist dinghies (Optis). The goal of the Optis Tots class is to create a positive learning environment so that children are comfortable around the water and excited to sail. 
Parents are encouraged to volunteer during the program and are welcomed to watch lessons.

OPTI DAY CLASS: Opti Seaman and Mate
(Beginner & Intermediate, ages 8-10, Students must be 8 by May 1st)
Session A: Monday/Wednesday 9am-4pm (June 10 - July 31)  SOLD OUT

Session C: Fridays 9am-4pm (June 14 - August 2)  SOLD OUT

This 8-week class is for younger sailors that want to participate in the traditional all-day program with an emphasis on FUN. Students will be grouped by ability. Opti Seaman for beginner and Opti Mate for those with more experience and a solid understanding of fundamentals. Students will independently sail in our Optimist dinghies under the close supervision of instructors and participate in daily classroom lessons and on-the-water activities. The curriculum includes terminology, basic seamanship (knot tying, rigging), basic boat handling (steering, sail trim, capsize recovery), and course sailing. Opti Mates will also get an introduction to the race course. Lessons also feature STEM concepts such as understanding wind, small machines, the physics of sailing, water quality, and more.

Junior 420 Day Class
(Beginner and Intermediate, ages 10-16, Student must be 10 by May 1st)

This 8-week class introduces children to the basics of sailing aboard Club 420s with an emphasis on FUN and teamwork.  Students will be grouped according to knowledge and skill level. The class  features terminology and rigging, wind and water theory, safety, boat controls, sailing maneuvers, points of sail, knot tying, and rules of the road. As students progress, lessons will also feature sail trim, capsize recovery, course sailing, introduction to the spinnaker, and beginner racing. Students will become proficient in monohull dinghy sailing but will also have the opportunity to sail aboard J/22s to experience one-design “big boat” sailing. Advanced sailors may try the single handed Laser. Lessons also feature STEM concepts such as understanding wind, small machines, the physics of sailing, water quality, and more.
